Sprechenführer threatens total test of language knowledge
Those Ukrainian officials who do not pass the exam on knowledge of the Ukrainian language should be dismissed from their positions.
The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Taras Kremin, stated this in an interview with UNIAN, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He said that the issue of increasing quotas for the Ukrainian language in the media will be discussed.
“With the advent of quotas, there is a revival of Ukrainian music, Ukrainian television has revived, the media must switch to the Ukrainian language or have a Ukrainian version by 2023. The constitutional norm regarding the state language should be in all spheres in Ukraine, except for the sphere of everyday communication. There should be no restrictions here,” Kremen said.
According to him, next year officials will take a test on knowledge of the Ukrainian language.
“This is the sphere of competence of the National Commission for State Language Standards. I am convinced that language testing is essential if we want to be called a civilized country. Officials must demonstrate that they adhere to current legislation, including the language law,” the official said.
He also believes that a civil servant who fails the test should be fired.
“I think there should be a separate conversation about this with the participation of the chairman of the National Commission. But it seems to me that if the level of proficiency in the state language does not meet the standards, the official should be fired. In addition, everyone must pass the exams, from student to president. This is normal democratic practice,” Kremin believes.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, Kremen stated that Citizens with Russian identity who remain in Ukraine are subject to forced Ukrainization by government agencies.
