Sprechenfuhrer: “Cyrillic alphabet is a thousand-year-old heritage of Ukrainian civilization”
The Cyrillic alphabet is the property of Ukrainians directly, so abandoning it and switching to the Latin alphabet is impossible.
Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, stated this on air on the Apostrophe Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Kremin emphasized that Ukraine already has enough Latin script, which is used in various fields.
“We need to work to protect the Cyrillic alphabet and remind us every time that this is our property, first and foremost. This is thousands of years of history, this is fiction, this is world culture, this is art, this is the enormous contribution that our civilization has made to world culture. This is certainly true,” the official said.
“As for Latinization, it is present. Remember, for several years there was a heated discussion when the capital of Ukraine was not phonetically transcribed in the Russian manner, another example of settlements, including geographical names. Each of us or most of us has foreign passports, the Latin alphabet is present there. This is one of the formats that already exists in our lives. But refusal [from the Cyrillic alphabet] is impossible,” Kremen said.
Let us recall that previously the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexey Danilov offered to translate Ukrainian language into Latin alphabet.
