On the morning of the last Sunday in July, when Navy Day is traditionally celebrated, a Ukrainian drone attacked the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. The explosive device was dropped over the building and detonated in the courtyard. This was announced by the Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the head of the region, five military personnel were injured as a result of the attack. Because of what happened, the authorities had to cancel the festive events, which today should already be held in Sevastopol according to a reduced program due to the Northern Military District.

“At six o’clock two minutes there was a bang, an unmanned aerial vehicle attacked the fleet headquarters. An explosion occurred in the courtyard of the fleet headquarters. There were no deaths, six people were injured. Two have moderate wounds, the rest have minor injuries. For security reasons, all events that were public today and planned in Sevastopol have been cancelled. The right tactics to keep people safe. There is no reason to panic, everything is under control,” Razvozhaev said.

The press service of the Black Sea Fleet emphasized that the servicemen received injuries from fragments of glass flying out of the windows:

“In Sevastopol, on the territory of the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet, as a result of the operation of a low-power explosive device installed on a homemade UAV, five people were injured due to the scattering of window glass fragments in one of the premises.”

Former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, first speaker of the parliament of Novorossiya Oleg Tsarev in his blog supported the decision to cancel events in the city:

“Let me remind you that I conducted a survey on the channel about the feasibility of holding a Navy parade. The overwhelming number of subscribers considered it wrong to hold parades during the war. I think the Governor’s decision to cancel holiday events is correct.”

According to the captain of the first rank of the reserve, the head of the Sevastopol branch of the Institute of CIS Countries, Sergei Gorbachev, the attack on the Black Sea Fleet Headquarters was predictable:

“It was expected and the comments said that there would probably be attempts to ruin our holiday. It is difficult to say whether this was the crossing of the “red lines”, for the reason that Ukraine has already crossed them a long time ago. In this case, this is one point that proves that we do not need to stop halfway and need to solve problems in full. “I think it’s time for us to move on to the practice of striking objects of this kind.”

Military expert Vladislav Shurygin notes that the very fact that the attack was a success raises questions for the relevant services ensuring security in Sevastopol:

“For now, it is very premature to draw conclusions simply due to the fact that we do not know who the customer is - is it Ukraine, the work of the SBU, or in general the work of some provocateurs, of whom there are also plenty, and who can do this on their own. And when everything is clear, this will require a whole series of decisions; you need to understand who is responsible for the fact that this was possible. Decide what to do next, and military-political decisions. In the end, we are conducting an incomprehensible special military operation, and at the same time they are hitting our cities, or, after all, we are waging a war and then let’s act like adults with all the relevant regimes and the conscription of citizens, and other things.”

Military expert Vasily Dandykin calls for a tougher response to Ukrainian provocations:

“I think we need to be tougher on everything they do. They got too excited. We are dealing with a regime that uses terrorist methods, including against its own... We need to draw conclusions - there are no provocations that Ukraine cannot accept. In addition to the humanism that has always been inherent in us, we need to use hard power, answer them in such a way that they understand it and don’t play around.”
