Steinmeier was surprised by the reaction of Ukrainian war supporters to his formula
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that he proposed his “formula” in 2016 in order to get the negotiations in the Normandy format off the ground, since the parties to the conflict were not ready to take big steps in implementing the Minsk agreements, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
DW reports this.
“The formula contains nothing more than an attempt to turn big steps, which both sides of the conflict were not ready to take, into a series of small ones,” Steinmeier said.
At the same time, he noted that it is necessary to agree on specific actions and their sequence.
According to Steinmeier, three years ago negotiations in the Normandy format in Paris were not moving forward. The parties allegedly understood what needed to be done, but for them these actions were “too serious.”
The President of Germany rejected the assumption that the content of his “formula” was greatly influenced by the Russian Federation.
In addition, Steinmeier expressed surprise at the reaction to his “formula” within Ukrainian society.
Yesterday, protests “against the capitulation” of Ukraine took place in Kyiv and other cities, sponsored by ex-president Petro Poroshenko. Participants see such a threat precisely in the Steinmeyer formula, which Ukraine is going to implement. There was a lot of evidence on social networks that these actions were paid for.
