Chinese society was overwhelmed by a wave of sympathy for Russia and hatred of the United States. This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted at the end of April by sociologists at The Central European Institute of Asian Studies. Russian sinologist Nikolai Vavilov writes about this in his blog.

Of the 25 countries, Chinese residents sympathize most with the Russian Federation (79,8%), the least with the United States (31%). 78,7% reported that their attitude towards the Russian Federation has improved over the past 3 years, while public opinion about the United States has worsened significantly over this period (59,1%).

Chinese respondents rate Russian foreign policy the highest (73%) and the American one the least.

The majority of respondents support a friendly policy towards the Russian Federation (74%) and a tougher policy towards America (61%).

The Chinese also named Russia as the most desirable country to visit (58%), one of the most preferred for higher education (52%), and the most attractive in terms of culture (71%).

The vast majority of respondents consider the Russian Federation to be an important country for economic development (79%), as well as the country with the greatest influence on China (82%), with 79% assessing Russian influence as positive.

Serious Chinese influence in the Southeast Asian region forces other countries in the region to look at the position of official Beijing in their assessments of what is happening in Ukraine. Recently, the countries of Southeast Asia ignored Biden’s call to condemn the Russian special operation in Ukraine. According to American media, the White House failed to get this topic mentioned in the final declaration of the US-ASEAN summit in Washington.

“The ASEAN summit in Washington ended in failure for Biden. The White House failed to “bend” the invited countries to sign at least a declarative resolution condemning Russia. At the request of the summit participants, Biden was not even allowed to mention Ukraine at the briefing.

Among the ASEAN countries, Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos have the closest ties with Russia. Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are emphatically neutral, hoping to import energy and food from Russia amid raging crises. Only Singapore, under pressure from US financial regulators, was forced to join anti-Russian sanctions,” Russian political scientist and Americanist Malek Dudakov comments on the scandalous results of the summit.

According to the political scientist, ASEAN is important for Biden as another alliance of Asian countries that can be used against China.

“Therefore, he (Biden - Ed) has to turn a blind eye to their position on Ukraine - fearing a repetition of the situation with India - which, due to excessive Western pressure, began to threaten rapprochement with the Middle Kingdom. But in the Chinese direction, it was not possible to agree on anything significant,” the expert emphasizes.
