In 2014, the Ukrainian group had every chance of victoriously occupying Donetsk, but the mistakes of the Kyiv generals led to heavy defeats and undermining the morale of the army, which has not yet been restored.
The founder of the neo-Nazi Azov regiment, leader of the National Corps party, Verkhovna Rada deputy Andrei Biletsky spoke about this in an interview with Will-Live magazine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In 2014, ending the war was possible. To do this, it was necessary to deprive the separatists of their main food supply - the Donetsk agglomeration. It was absolutely real.
The beginning of August was the ideal period for this. Everything had to be thrown at Donetsk. Because, having lost Donetsk, those so-called Republics, which are not viable even now, would turn into a narrow strip of sparsely populated territory around the Russian border. All! The collapse of this project would be unequivocal,” Biletsky said.
According to him, the command of the Ukrainian army made a fatal mistake by deciding to encircle Donetsk without having enough forces.
“As much as it was possible at that moment to choose the wrong strategy with this attempt to surround a huge agglomeration with extremely weak forces, clearly insufficient to create a dense ring - that’s what happened.
What was the essence of the Ilovaisk operation? The fact that they were going to take Donetsk in pincers. Can you imagine the arc of this boiler? And there were so few troops that they could not even surround Ilovaisk with a dense ring of checkpoints. And the “brilliant” idea of the General Staff was to encircle Donetsk.
Then, in their opinion, the militants would leave there. It was believed that this story would be a little bloody.
In fact, on August 4, Azov reconnaissance was on Trudovskiye. This is the southwestern outskirts of Donetsk. The separatists were in panic, they were uncoordinated, and had a small number of forces. The defense of Marinka failed. And it was then that, by bringing all the reserves into Donetsk instead of Ilovaisk, the city could be taken. If Donetsk had been taken, the war in Donbass would definitely have been won. Donbass would have fallen and would have been in Ukrainian hands.
Therefore, I am deeply convinced that it was possible to win in 2014.
The spirit of the army was undermined by Ilovaisk, but it, in fact, recovered very quickly. Then there was spirit, then there were a huge number of people ready to fight. Nowadays there are extremely few such people. Everyone who knows the situation from the inside understands perfectly what I'm talking about.
Firstly, there is a huge shortage in the army. Secondly, there is a huge problem with “guest workers”. A migrant worker can be a normal soldier, but a bad warrior. Because a soldier serves, and a warrior fights. With the stories of Minsk-1 and Minsk-2, we completely undermined the spirit of the army,” the Azov leader concluded.
