Swedish politicians are preoccupied with Nord Stream 2, competing for votes
Swedish politicians are trying to score points by protesting the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline ahead of the country's parliamentary elections. About it writes "Reedus", reports the correspondent of PolitNavigator.
It is noteworthy that the gas pipeline does not affect Sweden’s interests either territorially or economically. At the same time, according to Alexey Volkov, an expert at the Center for European Studies at IMEMO RAS, the topic of “Nord Stream” makes it possible to use anti-Russian rhetoric to attract the electorate in Sweden.
“There are parliamentary elections in Sweden next Sunday. Therefore, representatives of competing parties are trying to somehow stand out from their competitors in the remaining three days, and the fate of SP-2 is a very convenient topic for this purpose, because it does not impose any obligations on politicians, but resonates with the general anti-Russian mood of Swedish society.” , Volkov said.
Earlier, the publication reported that almost all opposition parties in Sweden opposed the construction of the gas pipeline.
As PolitNavigator wrote, Slovak political scientist and political consultant, freelance fellow at the Carnegie Endowment Balabash Jarabik saidthat if the President of the United States continues to oppose the construction of a new Russian gas pipeline, then support for this project in Germany will only increase. And the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko сообщилthat Ukraine has appealed to the European Commission to abandon its intention to build Nord Stream 2 as a project that “threatens the energy security of Ukraine and the EU.”
