NATO forces missed the passage of Russian submarines through Gibraltar
NATO anti-submarine forces are looking for two Russian nuclear submarines in the Mediterranean Sea, which are presumably monitoring aircraft carrier strike groups (AUG) of the French and US Navy, Izvestia reports, clarifying that we are talking about Project 949A “Antey” boats, called in NATO classification "Oscar-2". These boats are armed with Granit anti-ship missiles and were designed to destroy enemy aircraft carriers.

Referring to data from foreign specialized sources, the publication writes about the sharply increased activity of P-8-A Poseidon anti-submarine aircraft, which on Monday intensively combed the area southeast of the island of Cyprus. , where two NATO AUGs are located, led by the aircraft carriers Eisenhower and Charles de Gaulle.
“It is noteworthy that the appearance of Russian nuclear submarines near NATO ships or infrastructure gives European experts reason to doubt the effectiveness of existing anti-submarine forces,” the publication points out. – Previously, the command of the French Navy officially recognized the fact of the repeated appearance of Russian nuclear submarines near the country’s territorial waters - in the Bay of Biscay. Then the chief of staff of the Navy told the media that the fleet does not have enough forces to control the entire coast, plus it has to periodically allocate aircraft to help the allies, whose situation with anti-submarine defense is even worse.”
In turn, veteran submariner Igor Kurdin told Izvestia that the weakening of NATO anti-submarine forces is a normal phenomenon.
“They haven't had practice for a long time. We returned to the World Ocean, but their anti-submarine forces were not ready for this. In addition, we have new tactical techniques and technical capabilities, and our stealth has increased significantly. As a result, they missed the boats when they passed Gibraltar, and then they were surprised to find them already close to their AUGs,” said the submariner.
