Now the library named after “Kamenyar”, which was a Ukrainian legal entity, is in the process of liquidation. Registration of a new legal entity in the legal framework of the Russian Federation has not yet been completed.
Starting from the new year, the library will operate as the State Budgetary Institution of Culture of the Republic of Crimea “Crimean Republican Universal Scientific Library”.
The library traces its history back to 1843, when the “Public Reading Library” was opened in Simferopol with a book collection of 600 volumes. In 1921, the Central Regional Library of Crimea was created, combining the collections of several libraries.
The library received the name of Ivan Franko in 1956 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the “kamenar” after Nikita Khrushchev’s voluntary transfer of Russian Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR.
Since 1925, the library occupied the building of the former Assembly of the Nobility. In 2007, a new building of the institution opened near the Salgir embankment in the center of Simferopol. The scientific library is one of the largest book depositories in Crimea and a methodological center for all libraries of the republic.
