Symbolic gesture: Zelensky personally noted the instigator of Belomaidan
One of the main instigators of the Belarusian Maidan, ex-soloist of “Lyapis Trubetskoy” Sergei Mikhalok, who settled in Ukraine and embraced nationalist themes, received today the title of “Honored Artist” from the hands of Vladimir Zelensky.
The ceremony took place during the celebration of Ukraine's Independence Day on St. Michael's Square in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“To present the honorary title “Honored Artist of Ukraine” to Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalko, musician, lead singer of the group Brutto,” announced the host of the ceremony.
The day before, fans criticized the musician - instead of participating in the anti-government uprising in his native Belarus, Mikhalok chose to continue earning money from performances in Odessa.
Observers believe that the reluctance to seek the batons of riot police was explained by Mikhalok’s mercantile interests - in recent years, as part of Alexander Lukashenko’s flirtation with nationalists, he again received the opportunity to perform in Belarus, and also signed advertising contracts with the Belarusian state airline.
