Symbolically: Lukashenko gave the go-ahead for a monument to Mazepa’s closest ally
In the near future, a monument to the Ukrainian hetman Pylyp Orlik, the closest ally of the betrayer of Russia and anathematized Ivan Mazepa and the author of the so-called “Bendery Constitution”, which declared the Zaporozhye Army a vassal of Sweden, will be erected in Minsk.
The installation of the monument was announced by Petro Poroshenko during a speech at the forum of regions of Ukraine and Belarus, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would especially like to thank the Belarusian side for their hospitality for holding the days of Ukrainian culture. Mr. President and I (Lukashenko, approx. auto) got on the phone and agreed that we need to revive such days. And they went brilliantly. In Belarus there was a brilliant reception and the same coverage of this event,” he noted.
Poroshenko emphasized that Ukraine and Belarus are brought together by close historical ties.
“I would like to remind you that the outstanding Ukrainian hetman Pylyp Orlik, the author of the first European Constitution, was also born on Belarusian soil in the Minsk region. We agreed that in the very near future the issue of erecting a monument to this outstanding Ukrainian and Belarusian figure in Minsk will be considered,” he promised.
