The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church officially broke ties with Bartholomew
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow stops commemoration in the prayers of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople.
This decision was made today at an emergency meeting by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The fact that we are stopping the prayerful commemoration of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the fact that we are suspending concelebration with the hierarchs of the Patriarchate of Constantinople does not mean a complete break in Eucharistic communion. Those laity who come to Mount Athos or find themselves in the churches of the Patriarchate of Constantinople can receive communion there,” Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, explained the decision.
He emphasized that the decision taken today does not close the door to dialogue.
“If actions of this kind continue, we will be forced to completely break off Eucharistic communion. This will mean that the Patriarch of Constantinople, who often positions himself as the head of the planet's 300 million Orthodox population, will not be so. Half of the Orthodox population will not recognize him even as first among equals,” Hilarion said.
