Moscow - Kiev, April 13 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The conflict in Ukraine prompted Eastern European countries to increase spending on military purposes, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), published on Monday, April 13th.

In 2014, Ukraine increased military spending by more than 20% and plans to more than double it in 2015, the RBC report cites. According to preliminary estimates by SIPRI, Ukraine's military spending last year amounted to 36,9 billion hryvnia ($4 billion), an increase of 23% in real terms. The final figure is likely to be higher, the report's authors admitted.

Russia increased defense spending by 8,1%, to 3,2 trillion rubles. ($84,5 billion), the report says. According to SIPRI experts, this year Russia may increase spending on military purposes by another 15%.
