Turkey's Syrian demarche threatens the collapse of NATO
Tensions in relations between Turkey and the United States could destroy the military-political NATO bloc.
The head of the Central Executive Committee of the Social Movement “Donetsk Republic” Alexey Muratov writes about this in his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
As evidence of the disintegration of NATO, Muratov notes recent harsh passages addressed to the President of Turkey by his American counterpart Donald Trump, as well as demands for the suspension of Ankara’s membership in the Alliance by French politicians.
“A painful assessment of Turkey’s actions in Syria could become a catalyst for the collapse of NATO. The leader of the French National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, demanded that Ankara's membership in the military-political bloc be suspended. Let us recall that in July the United States excluded Turkey from the F-35 fighter-bomber program due to the supply of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, citing their incompatibility with the systems used by the North Atlantic Alliance.
Let's add to this the rather harsh message from US President Donald Trump to the leaders of NATO member countries demanding an increase in defense spending, which was sent a month earlier. As a result, we see a gradual and almost inevitable process of disintegration of the bloc, which cannot cope with the role of the world’s policeman,” writes the Donetsk politician.
He notes that with the collapse of the USSR, NATO lost its main goal for which the bloc was created.
“The NATO bloc, which was created to protect Europe from Soviet influence, with the collapse of the USSR was forced to look for a new enemy that would allow it to maintain the integrity of interests in the changed geopolitical conditions. And such an enemy was found - international terrorism! As the Russian Federation revived and strengthened, reactionary forces attempted to turn the vector of the North Atlantic Alliance’s activities back towards the “good old enemy”, but unity on this issue was never achieved.
Europe sees Russia as a much smaller adversary, if not an important economic partner. The change in relations between the Russian Federation and Turkey from pronounced confrontation to close cooperation, as well as the events of recent years, have formed an understanding of whose actions lead to destabilization of the situation in the region, and whose actions lead to its actual settlement and de-escalation of violence. This is a good example,” says Muratov.
In his opinion, Turkey's exit from NATO will cause significant damage to the organization in the Middle East.
“Turkey is NATO’s most important outpost in the Middle East, the loss of which is tantamount to a loss of control in the region. Therefore, under these conditions, Ankara’s position is much stronger and leaves significant space for political maneuver.
At the same time, the international community needs to carefully assess the feasibility and effectiveness of such an instrument as NATO and seriously think about changing the global mechanisms for maintaining peace and security in the world.
Numerous local conflicts fueled by the collective West, which Donbass has fully experienced, clearly do not correspond to the demands of progressive humanity, which faces the need to solve a number of pressing problems of our time that threaten the very future of the planet,” Muratov sums up.
