Syria. Attack on Russian diplomats
The Russian embassy in Damascus came under mortar fire. This was reported by a correspondent for the Associated Press news agency. At the time of the shelling, a rally in support of Russia’s actions in Syria was taking place near the walls of the diplomatic mission.
Two mines were fired into the territory of the representative office. The first of them hit the building itself, causing a fire. After the explosion, the crowd in front of the embassy began to disperse, and at that moment a second mine hit the embassy territory, exploding on the sports ground.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, no one was injured as a result of the shelling.
It appears that the Saudi prince's veiled threat that Russia would incur the fire of Islamic fanatics, expressed at his Sunday meeting in Sochi with Vladimir Putin, is slowly beginning to come true.
On Monday, the Russian FSB said that the attackers arrested the day before, who were preparing a terrorist attack “in the Moscow region,” were trained in ISIS camps in Syria.
Also yesterday, Abu Mohammad al-Golani, the leader of the al-Nusra Front (the Levantine offshoot of al-Qaeda, whose support Turkey and Saudi Arabia disavow), in a video message called for revenge for Russian military intervention against the Alawites (the religious minority to which Assad belongs), already traditionally predicted a “new Afghanistan” for Russia, and said that the Russians “will be defeated on the threshold of Damascus.” And today, on the threshold of the Russian embassy in Damascus, the first shells exploded.
