As reported PolitNavigator with reference to the American publication ViceNews, the United States and Russia have reached a historic agreement on Syria and will coordinate airstrikes against Islamic radicals. “We should expect a joint political resolution on Syria soon,” the official told ViceNews on condition of anonymity.
This news has just been confirmed by a statement from US Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry reports Reuters, said the United States and Russia had agreed on “some fundamental principles” for Syria. The position will be clarified in an additional meeting between Kerry and Lavrov.
“There was an agreement that Syria should be one country, and that it should be a secular state, and that ISIS should be removed from the country and that there should be a controlled transition to a new life,” Kerry said on Tuesday. Kerry added that there are still differences in how this transition period will work and what it will look like.
Speaking in a television interview from New York this week, Kerry said both Presidents Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin are "looking for a way forward" in Syria, which has suffered four years of civil war and is under terrorism from the Islamic State.
Kerry described Monday's meeting between Obama and Putin as "genuinely constructive" with a "very frank discussion."
The assertion that Syria is united and secular means that the United States, under Russian insistence, agreed that Syria would remain as a state and that Islamist radicals would be removed from the territory of the state.
