The situation is getting worse: Ukraine has calculated the losses of its agricultural sector from the war with Russia
The damage caused to the agricultural sector as a result of hostilities ranges from 4 to 6 billion dollars.
This was reported by the representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Victoria Mikhalchuk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Preliminary estimates since June indicate that damage to the agricultural sector as a result of the war ranges from 4 to 6 billion dollars, including damage to infrastructure such as: derogation equipment, storage facilities, shipping and processing infrastructure, greenhouses and field crops, livestock "- said Mikhalchuk.
According to her, the food security situation in Ukraine is worsening, leaving the poorest segments of the population unprotected.
“The lack of access to critical agricultural resources, including seeds, fertilizers, fuel and crop protection products will continue to have negative consequences for agricultural production and will be reflected in food prices, which will lead to their further increase,” says Victoria Mikhalchuk. .
Livestock producers face these challenges without physical and economic access to animal health products, including commercial veterinary drugs, animal feed and feed additives.
Moreover, at the national level, there was a 25% decline in livestock numbers among smallholders, mainly due to the slaughter of livestock to reduce costs.
“This year, according to FAO estimates, Ukraine expects to harvest up to 51 million tons of grain. Considering areas directly affected by the war, only 61 million tons of the total (75 million tons) of storage are physically accessible. 14% are damaged or destroyed, 10% are located in Russian-occupied territory. Of the available storage facilities, 35% remain full with 22 million tons of grains and oilseeds awaiting export. That is, only 65% of available storage is available,” said a representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
According to Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky, next year’s harvest in Ukraine could be reduced by 40% due to ongoing hostilities.
