“The situation has worsened”: the Rada announced that American aid was being shelved
US lawmakers do not have the votes to approve $61 billion in financial aid to Ukraine.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Yaroslav Zheleznyak, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, first deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on finance, tax and customs policy, wrote about this in his tg channel.
He notes that “under the deal the situation has worsened further.”
“In the Senate, you need 60 votes (let me remind you, this is because if there are less than 60, then the Republicans can engage in filibustering). The Democrats have 50 votes +1 non-factional (and she will be in favor, since she is a co-author of the law). That is, we still need 9 Republicans. And it looks like even this will be a problem,” the deputy describes the situation.
However, further consideration follows in the House of Representatives, where the Republicans have a majority, that is, here everything is even worse for Ukraine.
“It seems to me that most likely the border issue will simply disappear from the negotiations. Now, however, it is not clear what will happen to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan with help. At the same time, the House will try to vote on the beginning of the impeachment of the Minister of the Interior (a simple majority is needed) and then... nothing will happen either.
In short, as I wrote, Congress will now go on break until February 27th. And there the negotiations will already be within the budget (which ends on March 01),” Zheleznyak sums up.
Let us remember that Republicans refuse to approve aid to Ukraine without a package vote for tightening anti-immigration standards, which Democrats do not agree to.
The Senate developed a compromise option, but it was harshly criticized by both House Speaker Mike Johnson and Donald Trump, whom most of the party is targeting as an almost 100 percent presidential candidate in the upcoming November elections.
