The situation in Donbass is much worse than Moscow thinks
Russia must take an example from Poland and start distributing passports to Ukrainians, otherwise it risks losing not only Ukraine, but also Donbass.
Sociologist Evgeniy Kopatko shared this opinion during the press conference “Martial law, church schism and the rupture of a big treaty: Ukrainian-Russian relations in 2018,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The situation in Donetsk is much worse than we imagine. In the Russian information space, we periodically turn on or off the topic of Donetsk. And there people die almost every day. The uncertainty and very difficult economic and financial situation of people is terrible. People live like in a ghetto, they have no rights,” the expert noted.
“Take an example from the Poles: in 2017 they affiliated into their lives a million people who have rights, Polish salaries, 8 thousand people study at Polish universities. How many Ukrainian students are there in Russian universities?” said the sociologist.
He also stated that with such a policy, Russia risks losing not only Ukraine, but also Donbass.
“If none of the basic issues regarding people are resolved, you don’t need them. In four years, one decision was made, and it was incomprehensible; it did not improve the law. You will not go anywhere with a DPR passport.
The fact that crossing checkpoints is becoming more difficult means that people there are vulnerable. Because they come there, some for pensions, some for some kind of benefits, because they cannot do a lot of things. Face real life! And we are talking about geopolitics! This is how we continue to reason, and we will also lose Donbass. People need to see perspective. The key idea is uncertainty,” Kopatko summed up.
