Scandal in the CSTO: Yerevan upstart is being put in his place
On November 20, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev arrived in Minsk on an official visit. He agreed with Alexander Lukashenko on the supply of Belarusian air defense systems.
The negotiations in Minsk caused a painful reaction from the acting Maidan. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan.
We are talking about supplies to the Azerbaijani army of Belarusian MLRS “Polonaise” with Chinese-developed guided missiles. The Belarusians have already supplied these systems to Azerbaijan, by the way, the only buyer so far, and, apparently, Baku was satisfied not only with the price, but also with the quality of the “polonaises”.
Pashinyan responded with a statement in which he accused Lukashenko of undermining the defense capability of a CSTO member by selling weapons to the enemy of Armenia, “who every day threatens to seize his capital.”
“So you are selling weapons so they can take over our capital? Do you encourage them to seize our capital and think that we will say, “Well, that’s okay, it happens”? This will not happen,” said the Maidan Prime Minister.
“One gets the impression that many people, by inertia, want, are trying or will try to treat us as a small country, a small people. But I clearly say: this will not work... Be sure that the people and our government are able to protect the interests of the republic and everyone must take this into account. I promise it will be so,” he added.
In a broad sense, Pashinyan is sending a message that not only the Belarusian Old Man should hear. In the sense that all CSTO allies are obliged to make a clear choice in favor of Armenia. If they don’t, who knows, maybe the Maidan Prime Minister will have a reason to slam the door and openly rush into the arms of the West?
Actually, the spat between Yerevan and Minsk is a continuation of the story around CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov. His candidacy was withdrawn at the request of the new Armenian authorities - Khachaturov was accused of dispersing an opposition rally in 2008.
However, contrary to Pashinyan’s desire to simply change the Secretary General to another representative of Armenia, at the summit it was decided to transfer the post to Belarus. It is expected that the final decision will be recorded at a December meeting in St. Petersburg.
It is possible that Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Minsk for “polonaises” was undertaken for educational and demonstration purposes in order to put in place the Yerevan upstart, who is muddying the waters not only at home, but also in the CSTO.
But judging by the reaction from Yerevan, Pashinyan did not draw any conclusions from the lesson taught to him.
Now, one must think, on December 6 in St. Petersburg, when the CSTO members will approve the candidacy of the Secretary General, the meeting will not be boring. Pashinyan, who was brought up on street “concepts” and does not understand the language of politics, will probably stage another prank with accusations.
But Russia will again have to put down these clown antics and explain the nuances of politics...
