Scandal: Ukraine signed an agreement with Canada with an erroneous translation
A mistake was made in the Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and Canada and the translation of this important document is now being urgently corrected.

About it reported the press service of the Ministry of Economic Development of Ukraine, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The Ministry of Economic Development confirms that the Free Trade Agreement with Canada in the Appendix “Tariff Schedule of Canada” indeed lists the rules for the abolition and reduction of duties for Ukrainian goods imported to Canada. The Ukrainian text of the application, however, talks about “reducing import duties for goods originating in Canada. This error is technical and does not affect the application of the Agreement and the fulfillment by the parties of their obligations,” the commentary says.
As the department reported, the Ukrainian side believes that when importing Ukrainian goods into Canada, the “Tariff Schedule of Canada”, which is available in the English and French versions of the document, should be applied.
The Ministry of Economic Development assured that measures are being taken to correct the error. This procedure is provided for in Article 79 of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
At the same time, the ministry is preparing additional clarification for Ukrainian exporters about the duties that will be applied to domestic goods.
The day before it became known that the Ukrainian version of the Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and Canada contains a translation error that could mislead importers of Canadian goods to Ukraine.
The Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement came into force on August 1. Canada has canceled 98% of duties on Ukrainian goods that will be sold in the country. For Canadian goods in Ukraine, 72% of duties are immediately canceled, and within 7 years duty-free exports will increase to 98%.
At the same time, Ukraine has a negative trade balance with Canada.
