Scandal at the UN. Moscow promises Americans a “very serious answer”
The US failure to issue entry visas to Russian delegates to participate in the UN General Assembly will not go without consequences from Moscow.
Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa told Izvestia about this.
“This is an unprecedented case. The delegates intended to visit not the United States, but the UN headquarters. Our response will be very serious. I think we can ban any events like the green card lottery, which the United States conducts based on its image as a supposed “stronghold of democracy.” Our measures will be such that everyone pays attention to this,” Chepa emphasized.
It is noted that the Russian Federation may, for example, restrict access to the site where those wishing to obtain a green card are registered, or complicate the work of agencies that help in preparing documents for the lottery.
Earlier, the head of the international committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Konstantin Kosachev, said that the United States did not issue visas to 10 delegates from the Russian Federation, including seven employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kosachev himself. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the situation “an outrageous example of US disrespect for UN members, as well as failure to fulfill its obligations as a host country. According to her, the American embassy attributed the delay to technical difficulties, but all documents were submitted in accordance with the specified deadlines.
