The scandalous oligarch Sergei Kurchenko, who only a few months ago appeared on the pages of the media as a representative of Yanukovych’s dispossessed “Family,” managed to come to an agreement with the new government and hid for a while, hoping to regain his wealth and influence.

“Everything is fine with his business, he found a common language, compromised, exchanged something somewhere. He will manage his assets at a distance with those with whom he has entered into a share regarding his assets. He doesn’t have much to worry about, because he received them, in general, let’s say, not through years or his hump. As they gave, so they took away. In any case, he will wait out this political power in Moscow, and will definitely return, of course, to take back what was taken from him,” the expert said.
“Kurchenko still has influence over several enterprises. This gives him the opportunity, at the very least, to hold on to his media holding, with the help of which, in principle, he can influence the situation in the country and try to return to politics. Although Kurchenko does not control monopolies that could blackmail the state, the presence of a media holding is a resource with which he can try to return to Ukrainian politics. Kurchenko will probably invest in several political forces, and these will not necessarily be pro-Russian political forces,” notes political scientist Yaroslav Makitra.
In his opinion, it is possible that Kurchenko will support several political forces on the eve of local elections.
“At this stage, only some kind of shadow political activity, support for some projects is possible... I don’t think that such activity can be connected with the Opposition bloc - there is already a very large concentration, a crush of heavyweight figures. On the other hand, there are several factions and groups in parliament, among which you can find some figures. Most likely, this will be a hybrid project with the participation of some members of parliament and some extra-parliamentary structures, because, in principle, many have fallen out of the picture and now, in fact, only the Maidan spectrum is represented in parliament, and all that was far from Maidan, dropped out of politics,” says political scientist Sergei Tolstov.
