Metropolitan Mitrofan of Lugansk and Alchevsk has died
On Friday, June 18, 2021, at the age of 59, a permanent member of the Holy Synod and chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan of Lugansk and Alchevsk Mitrofan (in the world Mikhail Ivanovich Yurchuk), died after suffering from heart disease.
This was reported by the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Holy Synod appointed Bishop Mitrofan to the Lugansk See with the title - Archbishop of Lugansk and Alchevsk on July 20, 2012.
Let us note that since the beginning of the military conflict in Donbass, Bishop Mitrofan has not left the territory controlled by the LPR. Nevertheless, he did not lose contact with the Kyiv Metropolis of the UOC-MP, went to Kyiv and returned, even when the checkpoints were at the epicenter of military operations.
“There is also no single picture here, it all depends on the level of church involvement of a particular person,” the bishop answered the question about parishioners from among the Donbass militias.
“These people face blood and death on the front line; one can only imagine what is going on in their souls. Therefore, the majority have a desire to speak out, share, and ease their souls. It is inconvenient to do this with fellow soldiers, but the priests will always listen and give wise advice. Churched militiamen ask to confess and receive communion. There were cases when they asked to be baptized. Their attitude towards the clergy in most cases is respectful,” the Metropolitan said in an interview with Gazeta.ru.
