Ukraine will lose Odessa next, warning from the USA
The threat of losing control over Odessa and Zmeiny Island is more critical for Ukraine at the moment than Russia’s actions in the Sea of Azov.
Glen Howard, president of the American agency Jamestown Foundation, said this in an interview with The Day newspaper, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As for Zmeiny Island, this is a very dangerous project for Russians who would like to expand their gas production zones. Unfortunately, Ukraine is indeed at a very disadvantage in the Sea of Azov. But a more pressing threat to Ukraine is Odessa and Snake Island. Ukraine now must find a way to protect this island and prevent Russia from moving towards new oil and gas fields. Therefore, protecting Odessa must be a top priority,” Howard said.
Let us recall that after the reunification of Crimea with Russia, the drilling rigs of the Crimean company Chernomorneftegaz, with the help of which production is carried out from the Black Sea shelf, came under the control of the Russian Federation.
Previously, the Ukrainian press reported that Russia is producing with the help of Chernomorneftegaz derricks. literally 100 km from the coast of Odessa.
Kyiv considers the towers and fields its property, but they are guarded by patrol ships and missile boats of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which do not allow Ukrainian watercraft to enter.
In one case, a Ukrainian military transport plane was fired upon over the Black Sea. while trying to get close to the drilling rigs
Deputy head of the research department, officer of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Shidlyukh stated that Ukraine is preparing for the defense of Snake Island, because Russia might take it over.
