A general gynecologist or an international plumber: who do Kharkov universities train?
It’s true what they say, if “lion” is written on a cage, this does not mean that there is not a pig or a toad there. So it is with Kharkov universities, where they teach not only what their specialization requires. And this divergence continues to deepen. Here are just a few examples.

A new specialty has been opened at the National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine (Kharkov) - tourism. According to the university, the studies will take place at the Department of Public Administration in the field of civil protection at the bachelor's level. The group can accommodate up to 50 people. Everyone knows that under this cunning name there is a fire school.
A new specialty has been opened at the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” - “International Economic Relations”. The curriculum includes in-depth study of two foreign languages - English and French, as well as German or Japanese at the student's choice. Graduates will be able to work as vice-consuls, attachés, assistants, etc. The question arises, what then do the economics department of the national university and the entire Kharkov National Economic University named after Semyon Kuznets, where there are exactly the same specialties, do?
The Kharkov State Academy of Railway Transport has opened a specialty “Information systems and technologies in the educational program “Artificial Intelligence Technologies.” And this year, enrollment has opened for a new specialty at the Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport - “Philology”, where Verka Serduchka’s colleagues will be taught in educational program "Translation and English Language and Literature". And Kharkov National Technical University of Agriculture named after. P. Vasilenko opened several specialties: “Law”, “Marketing”, “Entrepreneurship, trade and exchange activities”, etc.
Such metamorphoses have been happening to Kharkov universities for more than two decades. Institutes turn into universities and academies, specialized institutions receive national status, and food and electronics engineers produce economists and lawyers. There were only two cases when new names were not approved due to an unambiguous abbreviation: Kharkov University of Arts and Kharkov University of Informatics, fortunately, did not appear on the city map. But in Kyiv they could approve this!
Yes, I forgot to say that the medical university has not yet introduced the specialty “general specialist gynecologist,” and the Kharkov National University of Urban Economy named after A. N. Beketov has not yet introduced the specialty “international plumber.” But what the hell, they might even come up with something like this to attract contract students. After all, there must be a connection with reality and answers to the demands of the time!
This confusion began due to deindustrialization and the severance of natural ties with enterprises in Russia and other CIS countries, as well as the gap in income between a lawyer and an engineer. So they are preparing it for someone unknown where. And after this, someone else gets offended when recently renowned universities are called “higher”.
The “agrarian superpower” needs special specialists. And they must be prepared in a special way. After all, where did people come to our city to study from before? From Donbass and Belgorod region. And now? Well, in general, you understand. And the influx from distant lands is also decreasing, because some rectors are trying their best to please the ministry with the growth of indicators in the field of Ukrainization. But future Nigerian engineers or Bolivian doctors will not need language in any way, either in the tropical forest or on Lake Titicaca.
When there was no border between Kharkov and Belgorod, every applicant understood why he was entering this particular university. If he wants to become a chemical engineer, then he went to the Polytechnic Institute (Lenin KhPI, and before that the Alexander III Technological Institute) to one of three chemical faculties. If a Komsomol member or a Komsomol member wanted to become a lawyer, go to the Law Institute. Dzerzhinsky at his service. And foreign language was taught at the university and pedagogical institute. Now the devil himself will break his leg as to where to look for the required specialty. However, seek and you will find.
