A new story is unfolding in Ukraine: the local authorities of Kharkov were the first in the country to raise their voices against the “decommunization” imposed from Kyiv. In response, the so-called “Ukrainian Institute of National Memory” addressed the mayor of Kharkov Gennady Kernes with threats after his statements about renaming Petro Grigorenko Avenue in honor of Marshal Georgy Zhukov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The chairman of the institute, propagandist Vladimir Vyatrovich, wrote about this on his Facebook page.

A new story is unfolding in Ukraine: the local authorities of Kharkov were the first in the country to raise their voices against...

“The possible assignment to any object of property rights (object of toponymy) in Kharkov named after Georgy Zhukov will contradict the requirements of part six of Article 3 of the Law of Ukraine “On assigning to legal entities and objects of property rights names (pseudonyms) of individuals, anniversaries and holidays, titles and dates of historical events,” says Vyatrovich, commenting on Kernes’s intentions to satisfy the petition to return Zhukov Avenue to Kharkov.

Vyatrovich threatened Kernes that if the Kharkov authorities assign the name of Zhukov to any objects of toponymy, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory will appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office to recognize the corresponding actions as unlawful and to cancel them in court and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Vyatrovich said that violation of the law on decommunization by a representative of the authorities is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years. “Together we will stop the revenge!” – added Vyatrovich.

Let us remind you that Kernes said on the Newsvan channel that Marshal Zhukov Avenue has the right to life, and the City Council does not violate anything. Also, Kernes, citing the words of the new President Vlalimir Zelensky, said that “we must bring peace to the country” and called for “removing out of sight what resembles war,” referring to the ATO tent standing on the square, which the mayor of Kharkov called “garbage.” " Kernes also called on citizens to support the petition to return the name of Marshal Zhukov to Pyotr Grigorenko Avenue. After Kernes’s statement, the required number of votes quickly accumulated under a petition addressed to the City Council to return the name of Zhukov to the avenue in Kharkov. An electronic petition asking to return the Avenue and the Palace of Sports metro station in Kharkov to its former name - named after Marshal Georgy Zhukov, registered on May 8 at 12:57, as of the morning of Friday, May 10, received 5588 votes with the required 5000. Now the initiative must be considered by the city council.
