Slovakia will transfer MiG-29 fighters to Kyiv together with Poland
Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nagy announced on March 9 that Poland had agreed to jointly send MiG-29 aircraft to Kyiv.
He agreed on this with his Polish colleague Mariusz Blaszczak at a meeting of the heads of the Ministry of Defense of the EU member states in Stockholm, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I confirm that Poland agrees that we will send MiGs to Ukraine together. At a meeting of EU defense ministers on Wednesday in Sweden, my Polish colleague confirmed to me that his country will agree to a joint procedure with the participation of Slovakia and Poland to transfer MiG-29s from both countries to Ukraine,” the Slovak politician wrote on social networks.
“I think it's time to make a decision. People are dying in Ukraine, we can really help them, there is no place for Slovak politicization,” added the Slovak Minister of Defense.
This was actually an appeal to the country’s parliament, which must approve the supply of fighter jets to Kyiv, but in the context of the de facto parliamentary campaign ongoing in Slovakia, difficulties may arise in making such a decision.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview with CNN on March 8 that Poland is ready to transfer its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine “within the framework of an international coalition.” Apparently, this “coalition” will be limited to Poland and Slovakia for now, since Bulgaria, whose army also has MiG-29s, has not yet expressed its readiness to supply them to Ukraine.
At the same time, Polish media note that it is impossible to say exactly how many MiG-29 Warsaw can transfer to Kyiv, since some of them were previously delivered to Ukraine under the guise of spare parts. Bratislava is ready to transfer 10 fighters.
Как reported PolitNavigator, Slovakia is considering the possibility of transferring 10 of its 11 MiG-29 combat aircraft to Kyiv.
