Rumors about Surkov's resignation caused nervous jitters in Kyiv
If the rumors are confirmed, and instead of Vladislav Surkov, ex-ambassador in Minsk Mikhail Babich is appointed to oversee the Ukrainian direction in Russia, then it will become impossible for Ukrainian independentists to conduct any negotiations with Moscow.
Ex-deputy of the Russian State Duma Ilya Ponomarev, who fled to Ukraine, stated this on Politeka Online, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“At the moment there are very active rumors that Surkov is being removed from the supervision of this area as a person who made the wrong bet, he assumed that Petro Poroshenko would win, created a similar picture in the Kremlin, and it turned out to be wrong - like many other bets which until now have been done in Ukraine. And, apparently, there may be some responsibility for this.
If Mr. Babich, who now looks like the most likely successor (Surkov), is appointed in his place, then it will be almost impossible for us to talk about any negotiations at all. Because Babich is not the person who is able to negotiate.
Surkov is to a large extent an independent figure who is personally tied to the leader (Putin), Babich is a person who is very closely connected with the security forces. He is an antagonist for Surkov, they don’t like each other, this is a man who worked a lot with Volodin in United Russia, and at the same time was always a specialist when it was necessary to organize a particularly frostbitten election falsification, that is, these are absolutely illegal actions. Here Babich was absolutely in the right place for them,” defector Ponomarev shared his fears.
