The death of extremist Navalny could affect US aid to Ukraine
If Donald Trump wins the US presidential election, then this will be bad news for Ukraine and the West as a whole.
Dan Smith, director of the Stockholm Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), which studies armed conflicts, issues of arms control and disarmament processes, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with Izvestia.
The expert was asked whether the West fears that Trump’s victory will hit transatlantic relations.
“It’s entirely possible that this could hit them hard. And I think that European governments are now trying to think about this. Some of them fear for the future, but to what extent these fears are exaggerated, we don’t know,” Smith said.
At the same time, answering the question whether Trump’s victory could reduce aid to Ukraine, he said that there is “not only fear, but expectation.”
According to him, as for the Joe Biden administration on the issue of assistance to the Kyiv regime, everything depends on Congress.
“We'll have to see what happens in the next few weeks. Previously, the political signal was that the military aid package for Ukraine would not pass the House of Representatives. But after Navalny’s death, the situation may change,” says Smith.
