One of the most popular politicians in Ukraine in the 1990s, the leader of the nationalist Rukh, Vyacheslav Chernovol, a competitor of Leonid Kuchma in the fight for the presidency, was killed with four blows of brass knuckles to the head, and did not die in an accident, as the official version said.

Former Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Nikolai Golomsha stated this on Channel 4, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the official version, Vyacheslav Chernovol died in a car accident on the Boryspil - Zolotonosha highway on March 25, 1999. Now Nikolai Golomsha stated that the cause of his death was not an accident but murder with brass knuckles.

“Certainly not an accident... We investigated the murder of Chernovol and established that Chernovol was killed. He was killed with four blows of brass knuckles to the back of the head, and the driver was finished off with the same brass knuckles,” the retired prosecutor said on the TV channel.

He also said that the inspection of the crime scene during the investigation was falsified.

“When we dug up the body, there were heavy metals in the bones. And we “promoted” an expert who said that he did not perform an autopsy on Chornovil’s body,” added Nikolai Golomsha.

Political scientist Alexander Bulavin considers this statement a PR move aimed at diverting people's attention from pressing problems.

“Golomsha’s statement is just one of the information reasons that they will now try to inflate against the backdrop of the unfavorable situation around the latest initiatives of the Ukrainian authorities. Now they are looking for any PR excuse to relieve tension and distract people from things that are vital to them.

From a legal point of view, this statement no longer has any meaning. And in general, Chernovol is a long-forgotten figure. If it were not for his son, then perhaps the aura of glory around Chernovol would have been preserved. But the son buried all opportunities to remember this man in a positive way.

All this together gives reason to believe that the initiative of Deputy Prosecutor General Golomsha is purely PR in nature,” said Alexander Bulavin.

Director of the Agency for Social Communications Sergei Belashko believes that the noise around Golomsha’s statement will quickly pass.

“Golomsha’s statement will not affect anything. Golomsha’s motivation can be very different - perhaps he wants to remove a stone from his soul, perhaps to fit into the information block. But even from the way this is all covered and commented on, I can conclude that in a week they will all forget about it, and that will be the end of it.

Of course, in a normal country such statements would be immediately taken under control by the president and the prosecutor general. An examination would have been carried out with the involvement of some international experts and clear conclusions would have been drawn. And if all this is not confirmed, and the person simply blurted out something like that, then he should be seriously punished for such statements.

Modern forensic tools make it possible to confirm or refute the story about four blows with brass knuckles - the corresponding damage simply remained on the skull, which has not gone away during this time.

If this is confirmed, then the case should be investigated anew, because such crimes do not have a statute of limitations, as I understand it. It is necessary to look for the culprits, interrogate the same Kuchma, or people from his circle, interrogate the security forces, interrogate the same criminologists who did the examination then.

But I am sure that nothing like that will be done. Everything will simply go away in the same way as all such loud statements in our country go away,” said Sergei Belashko.
