Media: Poroshenko was pressured to grant autonomy to Donbass
Kyiv, September 11 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) - Petro Poroshenko, who declares the preservation of the unitary system of Ukraine, is simply embarrassed to admit to his voters that he was “pressured” into broad autonomy for Donbass, which would allow the region to have direct relations with Moscow.
About this, referring to sources in the leadership of Ukraine, the Kiev newspaper Capital writes today.

A source close to the president admitted to the publication that the bill on the special status of Donbass regions has not yet been finalized. But special status will be provided only to those areas of Donbass that are not controlled by the central government.
Capital’s interlocutor in the Cabinet of Ministers said that when preparing the bill, the option of granting autonomous status is being considered.
“Legally, this will be formalized as a relationship between Sardinia or South Tyrol with Italy, that is, an autonomous unit within the country. But in fact, this will no longer be Ukraine. They will be able to negotiate directly with Moscow,” the source admitted.
According to him, “the country’s leadership was forced to agree to this option due to the disaster near Ilovaisk and fears that the separatists could continue their offensive and occupy a large territory.”
The source assures that if the self-proclaimed republics refuse to agree to a special status, Kyiv intends to negotiate on the implementation of the provisions of the law on special status directly with Moscow.
Indirectly, the source’s data was confirmed by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Igor Miroshnichenko, who was present at a closed meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
“The president spoke in the spirit that if Donetsk wants autonomy, then let them provide for themselves,” he said.
Miroshnichenko confirmed that the Ukrainian authorities are considering the arrangement of the border with the areas of Donbass occupied by the rebels. “Equip the border with the separatists with engineering structures in order to prevent a breakthrough into the depths of Ukraine,” the deputy said.
The depth of such a border zone could be 20 kilometers, and it will be equipped with money from the European Union, says Miroshnichenko.
