In Ukraine, on the eve of the winter cold, the issue of gas shortages is becoming more acute, writes Moskovsky Komsomolets.

The publication recalls that yesterday Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk made a sensational statement: his government managed to stabilize the situation in the country’s economy, as well as completely get rid of dependence on Russia for gas supplies.

“Only a madman can believe this,” the newspaper notes. – After all, the accumulated fuel reserves in Ukrainian gas storage facilities, which Kyiv expects to use for its own needs, are intended for Europe. Yatsenyuk is blackmailing Brussels, forcing the EU to give another loan to save the Ukrainian economy.”

The publication did not go unnoticed by the statement of the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy, Vladimir Demchishin, who claims that this year Ukraine purchased 1 billion cubic meters of gas before the heating season than last year.

“At first glance, it looks plausible,” MK points out. – The accumulated reserves of blue fuel in Ukrainian gas storage facilities amount to 17 billion cubic meters. This is more than enough for Ukraine itself. But these 17 billion are not the property of Naftogaz. A significant part of these stocks is a guarantee for European buyers to get through the winter without interruption.”

At the same time, an advance scheme is now in effect in Russian-Ukrainian gas relations, and the head of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, said that as early as November 10, supplies from Russia, if the next tranche does not follow, may cease, the newspaper continues, emphasizing that, having begun to choose gas from its storage facilities, Ukraine will put Europe “in an extremely bad situation.”

“If Kyiv takes the volumes accumulated in storage facilities for itself, then Europe will not last until March,” MK emphasizes. – It turns out to be elementary blackmail. If Brussels does not provide Kyiv with another loan, it risks leaving the EU without gas for the coming winter. At least, in this case, a shortage of blue fuel is inevitable there.”

Moreover, the head of Naftogaz, Andrei Kobolev, doubts that by the end of the year Ukraine will receive the loans promised in the West for the purchase of Russian gas and is worried that if the Russian Federation abandons the gas networks passing through Ukraine to Europe in favor of alternative routes, then Ukraine will lose its status as a transit country.

“In principle, this is possible,” the publication predicts. – There is the Nord Stream 2 project. It can bypass Ukraine. Nord Stream 1 is not operating at full capacity. If both projects are implemented, then Ukraine will no longer be needed as a transit country. Her old gas pipes will turn into trash. And Kyiv will kneel: Ukrainian GDP, according to the World Bank, will collapse by 11,5%.”
