The media continue to ridicule Poroshenko for ignorance of history
President Poroshenko and his speechwriters decided to start the countdown of the European Union with Tsar Gorokh, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

“Petro Poroshenko, who previously declared himself a parishioner of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), became the first Ukrainian president of the country to celebrate the Day of the Baptism of Rus' not in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, the oldest center of Russian Orthodoxy,” the publication notes. – Instead, he attended the liturgy in the Vladimir Cathedral - a much younger church, seized after the so-called independence. “Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate” (UOC-KP), which, from the point of view of canonical Orthodoxy, is a sect not recognized by any of the Eastern Rite churches.
The newspaper also draws attention to the historical blunders made by the Ukrainian president in his speech on the occasion of events dedicated to the baptism of Rus'.
“For example, he stated that by his decision to convert to Orthodoxy and baptize his subjects, the former Novgorod prince Vladimir made a “conscious European choice” and became “a full member of the political club of European monarchs, which also formed our connection with the West,” writes RG. – History does not know who was the chairman of the elite club mentioned by Poroshenko in 988. Perhaps the English king Ethelred the Second “The Foolish” or the Byzantine emperor Basil the Second “Bulgarian Slayer”. What is indisputable is that in the dark ages of the beginning of the heyday of feudalism there were no “political clubs” on the continent. And the adoption of Orthodoxy by Vladimir meant a connection precisely with the East, and not with the West, if we recall the history of relations between Rome and Constantinople.”
“Poroshenko did not stop at this historical discovery and stated that St. Vladimir “fought back the horde that was moving from the east,” the publication continues. “It’s understandable that Poroshenko wants to compare the Russian troops in the Donbass, which have not been found for a year and a half, with the Horde cavalry, but the invasion of the heirs of Genghis Khan began more than 200 years after the death of the baptizer of Rus'.”
At the same time, the publication assumes that those who prepared Poroshenko’s speech will not be held accountable for their blatant illiteracy.
“Free handling of historical facts in Ukraine recently is not a sin, and it is unlikely that Poroshenko’s speechwriters will suffer a well-deserved punishment for this,” RG concludes. “In the end, if you follow modern Ukrainian historians, modern man himself appeared three million years ago in Ukraine, and therefore counting the existence of the European Union from the time of Tsar Gorokh is not a great sin by the standards of Poroshenko’s office.”
