“Right before purchasing the tickets, it turned out that Ageeva did not have a passport. As an exception, the official Ukrainian side agreed to let the woman in using an internal Russian passport,” the publication writes.

According to Ageeva, representatives of the FSB tried to dissuade her from the trip, but she did not agree and went to Ukraine, accompanied by Novaya Gazeta correspondent Pavel Kanygin. They crossed the border in Belarus.

“One of the leaders of the border detachment came and spoke in Ukrainian about the procedure for a short-term stay and wished us a speedy meeting. “A very nice young man,” said Ageeva. “What did you expect?” “I was afraid of some kind of aggression. Read the comments that are sometimes written and shown,” Novaya writes.

In Kharkov, Ageeva was met by representatives of the SBU and a group of Western journalists. Together they went to Starobelsk to the pre-trial detention center where her son is being held.

“All the way Ageeva is silent, looking around at those present and at the views from the window. “When I return, I’ll start telling what I saw, and no one in the village will believe it. They will say, they recruited me, they drugged me, I can already imagine the conversations. Well, okay!” the newspaper quotes the woman.

Before meeting his mother, Corporal Ageev gave an interview to Western media, in which he stated that he ended up in the Lugansk region as a serviceman of the Russian army, but almost immediately after crossing the border he signed a contract with the “LPR”.

After meeting with her son, Ageeva expressed gratitude to Ukraine for the warm welcome.

“Hand on my heart, I’ll say that I expected something a little different. But it turned out that we received such a warm welcome and friendly relations. They tried to show attention and put us up in a hotel. That is, the attitude was very good, so human. “I am very grateful to them,” said the corporal’s mother.

Ageev himself, Novaya Gazeta claims, fears that upon his return to Russia he may be killed as “he said too much.”

Let us remind you that two fighters of the People's Militia of the LPR, captured together with Ageev, Ukrainian soldiers tortured to death. To get the information they needed, their eyes were gouged out and their fingers were broken in front of others. One of the dead was only 18 years old.
