Media: The EU has a chance to freeze this winter
Gazprom is being pushed to make a decision on further use of the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, in an article about the loss of the operator Nord Stream 2 AG in court in Dusseldorf in a lawsuit to exempt Nord Stream 2 from the EU gas directive.
The publication notes that even a decision positive for Gazprom would not be final, since it would still have to be approved in Brussels.
“On the other hand, Gazprom is clearly being pushed to make a decision on the supply of gas volumes blocked by the Third Package through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. Under these conditions, the following options are possible for Gaprom, in addition to challenging the decision of the land court in higher courts. This includes access to pipes from other suppliers. In this regard, reports have already appeared in the Russian press about Rosneft’s readiness to sell up to 10 billion cubic meters to Gazprom. m of gas per year and supply them through Nord Stream 2. In this case, it will be necessary to prove that the new supplier is independent and the gas supplied through the pipe does not formally belong to Gazprom,” the publication writes.
According to Igor Yushkov, a leading analyst at the National Energy Security Foundation, Gazprom could move gas delivery and receipt points in contracts with European buyers to the Baltic Sea, 12 miles from the German coast, where European legislation begins. The expert says that these points will be virtual, but formally the EU rule will be respected.
“In the meantime, Gazprom Export has stopped selling gas through its electronic platform for 2022, Bloomberg reports. As a result, European traders may not have time to fill their storage facilities before winter sets in. Gas prices will rise sharply, and Europeans have a chance to freeze this winter,” NG sums up.
