The media learned the secret about Putin's underwater superweapon
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation chose not to report that during yesterday’s visit to the Sevmash enterprise, the head of the department, Sergei Shoigu, discussed not only the completion of two new submarines in 2019, but also another one - the special submarine "Belgorod", which should be the first to carry a new one on board weapons - Poseidon drones, mentioned by Vladimir Putin in his address to the Federal Assembly.
“In the closed part of the meeting, the issue was raised about the launch in the near future of the special-purpose nuclear submarine Project 09852 Belgorod, which will become the first full-time carrier of the Poseidon underwater drone,” the Kommersant newspaper writes today.
According to the newspaper, this submarine was originally built according to Project 949A Antey, but in 2012 its hull was re-laid (launchers for cruise missiles were removed from it).
It is expected that the launch will take place in the spring. This could happen even in Putin's presence.
The submarine, which can carry up to six Poseidons on board, is due to enter combat duty in 2020.
The next carrier of drones of this type, the Khabarovsk submarine, laid down under Project 09851, is planned to be introduced into service in the Navy two years later.
Russian President Vladimir Putin first spoke about the unmanned underwater vehicle with a nuclear power plant being created in Russia in his message to the Federal Assembly in March of this year. The President then said that these drones could be equipped with both conventional and nuclear weapons and would be capable of destroying enemy infrastructure, aircraft carrier groups, and so on.
“Poseidon with a submarine is an asymmetric response weapon that is capable of destroying the North American continent,” Konstantin Sivkov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences, said at a press conference in Moscow.
