During the next humanitarian action, the agency's correspondent came to one of the boarding schools in Donetsk, where there are orphans and children from refugee families. Volunteers brought the usual help in these cases: food, clothing and gifts for the New Year.

While they were unloading food, we met some boys who were preparing for the holiday: they were rehearsing a costumed New Year's performance. The boys saw the militia accompanying the cargo and began to bombard them with questions: what is it like to be in the militia, is it scary during a battle, and the signature question for the boys - is it possible to hold a machine gun in your hands?

Naturally, no one gave them a machine gun, but the soldiers patiently explained that weapons are not a joke, and the main thing in life is study. The guys unanimously promised to study well, and then one of the boys asked the militiaman where he was from, what district, and it turned out that they were fellow countrymen, both from the Petrovsky district of Donetsk. And the boy began to tell: “And bombs fell on our house. All our windows were broken, and the fence was heavily pierced. We have a high-rise building, there are no windows anywhere. And it hit the roof several times; now there’s a big hole there. And there’s still a big hole in front of the house where a mine fell at night.”

Then the second boy joined. “We also had shelling. And it hit our house; there was a strong fire there. On the next street, shells also fell and exploded. One day I was walking home, I saw a large fragment lying there, and a shell next to it. It tore, but half of it was still there, so big. I didn’t touch it, well, maybe it’ll go off again.”

“At first our area was shelled. Back in the summer... then mom died, and dad stayed somewhere,” the child said.

The guys also told how they ended up in this boarding school, how many friends they had, and how it happened that they were left without parents. They told this calmly and... casually. The fighters and everyone present had no choice but to encourage the children and promise that they would always protect them and support them if anything happened.

After that, the boys remembered that they had to catch the afternoon snack and continue the rehearsal. They waved their hand at us and ran about their business...
