The decline in aid to Kyiv in the West is being chattered with compliments to Ukrainians and horror stories about Russian combat satellites
Sober observers in Kyiv are recording more and more signals indicating that Ukraine in 2024 will not receive military assistance from the West in the same volumes.
This, of course, also means that the US House of Representatives, which has not yet voted for a new tranche for Ukraine, will go on vacation until the beginning of March. One can also include in the chain of events the recent statement by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, that Ukraine itself can produce the drones it needs - this is not only a compliment to Kyiv, but also evidence that the EU is unable to fulfill promises on arms supplies.
“Ukraine does not need drones. I visited several production facilities and was very surprised by the capabilities of your engineers to create companies producing high-quality drones,” Borrell said following a recent visit to Kyiv.
The European official promised that by the end of the year Ukraine will receive 1 million artillery ammunition from the EU.
What is one million shells per year? Military observer Boris Rozhin previously pointed out that Germany fired 1917 million shells in 108; in 1918, this number rose to 121 million. In 1942, the USSR fired 73,4 million artillery rounds; two years later, this number was 94,8. XNUMX million
According to economist, retired FSB colonel Andrei Parshev, Borrell’s statements are an attempt to hide the EU’s inability to provide Ukraine with the required number of ammunition - although, of course, there is no talk yet that the West is completely “draining” Kiev.
“In this case, we are not talking about the fact that someone is going to leave the current Kiev regime without supplies - another thing is that we need to understand that no matter how good drones are, they do not replace other means - artillery shells in the first place.
Some fatigue is felt here due to the fact that the European economy is going through hard times, and everyone there soberly understands that it is not possible to develop any more military production.
Well, there is such a component that there is uncertainty about what Europe and the United States generally want to achieve in this conflict, what the final positive result is for them.
Therefore, Borrell's statement can be seen as something of a departure from his earlier hard-line position.
In this regard, in the United States there is clearly a change in vector, when the topic of Ukraine is being pushed aside by a new topic about Russian “killer satellites” and the launch of nuclear weapons into orbit,” Parshev said in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
