Kiev’s observance of the truce depends on Azov militants – conflict expert
How long the truce in Donbass will last directly depends on whether the Ukrainian command will be able to control the militants of the neo-Nazi Azov regiment, which actually dictates its own rules on the demarcation line.
Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, told PolitNavigator about this.
“In any case, such initiatives should be considered as a kind of breakthrough, because if the truce lasts at least one day longer than under current conditions, this is already a conquest. However, I have absolutely no confidence that the current agreements will last strategically longer than expected or become permanent agreements. It seems to me that over the next week, everything will, unfortunately, fall into place within the framework of the conflict in Donbass, and this truce will lead nowhere,” the expert said.
He noted that there are a number of factors that influence the ceasefire agreements not to be implemented.
“First of all, this is the position of a number of “units of the Ukrainian armed forces” - in fact, still conditional volunteer battalions. After all, we know that, say, 60 kilometers of the border between the DPR and the part of the Donetsk region controlled by Ukraine are actually under the control of the so-called “Azov” regiment. And this will already be a big problem. As already mentioned, if these initiatives are followed, then this, of course, will be a big plus,” Denisov added.
