Events in Kharkov showed that there will be no Novorossiya - expert
Moscow - Kyiv, September 30 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - Kharkov has become the center of events, the development of which can determine the future of the entire country. In the spring and summer, the Kharkov region, bordering the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, was considered as one of the regions of the future Novorossiya. Now the situation has fundamentally changed, writes the Kiev correspondent of NG.

On Monday night in Kharkov, the largest monument to Lenin in Ukraine, the height of which with its pedestal exceeded 20 m, was demolished. The demolition of the monument became a kind of litmus test for relations between government officials. The police did not interfere with the radicals, but immediately announced the initiation of a criminal case on the fact of vandalism. However, the governor of the Kharkov region, Igor Baluta, decided after the fact to dismantle the monument.
Kiev political scientist Igor Semivolos told NG that even “little green men” will no longer be able to destabilize the situation in the Kharkov region: “In order to provoke mass actions from the outside, you need to have a strong local core capable of leading protests and leading people along. In Kharkov, as in other regions neighboring the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, we see an increase in pro-Ukrainian sentiment. There is a simple and rational explanation for this: people do not want what is happening on the territory of the DPR and LPR to be repeated in their cities and villages, in their homes.”
The political scientist noted that the residents of Donbass have become hostages of the situation: “Even if the Dnepropetrovsk region is different, but, for example, the Zaporozhye region is similar to the Donetsk region in terms of population composition and social parameters. However, the “people's republic” scenario was not implemented there. And in Kharkov, where the situation was intensively shaken at first, nothing like this happened either. Why? Because local elites at the embryonic stage opposed the Novorossiya project. And they were able to convince people. The Donetsk elite waited, tried to negotiate something with one or the other, and lost control over the situation.”
Igor Semivolos believes that the self-proclaimed LPR and DPR will last until spring at most. “It is dominated by marginal and warring groups, supported by less than half the population. They have neither a solid foundation nor potential. This is not even Transnistria - at one time a rich and developed region with “red directors” who had good skills. In this sense, Donetsk and Lugansk are a “soviet” economic reserve with a cumbersome and slow-moving industry, with mines, the work of which did not require higher education. Please note that Mariupol is also the Donetsk region, where the economic structure is different and people have a different worldview. They are not waiting for a decision handed down from above, but are ready to take responsibility for their own destiny,” the political scientist explained. He believes that this difference between the regions that border Russia and were previously considered as regions of the future Novorossiya was not taken into account by the ideologists of the project. “Events in Kharkov confirmed: there will be no Novorossiya. Although a calm and peaceful life will not come soon either,” the political scientist is sure.
