In Ukraine, we need to create our own mass culture so that people would prefer to watch Ukrainian rather than Russian TV series.

Ukrainian sociologist, head of the Ilk Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation, Irina Bekeshkina, who actively supported the Maidan, stated this in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “New Time”.

According to her, during the years of independence they no longer began to speak Ukrainian.

“If in 1992 37% spoke predominantly Ukrainian, in 2016 - 42%. But the attitude towards the Ukrainian and Russian languages has changed. In 1996 there was a question: “Do you think Russian should be given official status?” “Yes” - 51%, “no” - 33%. The same question in 2016: “yes” - 30%, “no” - 55%. But this changed gradually. There was no sharp jump even in 2014,” admits Bekeshkina.

“It is impossible to force everyone to switch to Ukrainian simply because they want quick victories,” she added. – We need Ukrainian mass culture. Sorry, we need a Ukrainian Dontsova. Something people would read on the beach. Detective television series need to be killer. So that not Russians watch, but Ukrainians. In our country, according to a survey, only 1% of the population does not understand the Ukrainian language at all. Even in Crimea there were only 10% of them.”

At the same time, the sociologist emphasizes that Ukrainization must be carried out carefully, without violence, so as not to scare people away.

“Irina Farion, after her scandalous visit to the kindergarten, in the 2012 elections, I think, brought a couple of percent to the Party of Regions. And now Nitsoy. Well, guys, you can't do that. Even in terms of the success of what you want to achieve. You need to choose the right tools. This can only be done against the Ukrainian language,” Bekeshkina believes.
