Sociologist: there is a deadlock in Ukraine. Ukrainians want peace, but don’t believe in it
In Ukraine, a deadlock situation has developed around the war in Donbass. According to opinion polls, more than 60% of citizens are in favor of a peaceful resolution of the conflict, but almost half of those surveyed expect changes for the worse in the near future.

This was stated by sociologist Evgeny Kopatko.
“And this is in the summer, when we usually record relaxation and optimism, 47% believe that the situation will worsen. At the same time, if in 2014 the majority of Ukrainians believed that the Donbass problem could be solved by force, now a minority of them do. More than 60% believe that it is better to resolve the issue peacefully. But this should not inspire crazy optimism, because this is a dead end situation,” Kopatko said.
The sociologist explains the pessimism of Ukrainians by what they see: the Minsk process is not working, there is an escalation in the Donbass.
“There is no dialogue between Donbass and Ukraine. Ukrainian society, which has been told for two years that there are terrorists in the LDPR, will negatively perceive the authorities’ attempts to negotiate with the leadership of the republics. The Ukrainian authorities will not be able to explain their actions if they negotiate. Moreover, the level of trust in her is now lower than before Yanukovych left, that is, below 10%,” says Kopatko.
The sociologist believes that Ukrainians’ assessments of the prospects for the peace process are influenced by the general pessimism that reigns in society due to the socio-economic situation in the country.
“The problems are aggravated by the internal crisis, so you won’t get clear answers. There are no people who are able to clearly articulate their position,” Kopatko said.
