28% of remittances to Moldova came from Russia in 2022.
At the beginning of the year, Russia was inferior in terms of the volume of transfers, which amounted to $27,2 million to Israel, Italy, Germany, France and the United States. But in the second quarter, the volume of remittances from Russia suddenly almost quadrupled, reaching $107,2 million, and in the third it amounted to $142 million.
Israel remained in second place, Germany third, Italy fourth, France fifth and the USA sixth. Overall, the volume of transfers from abroad decreased by $2 million.
In this regard, it is not surprising that according to sociological surveys in the next five years, more respondents (37%) see Russia as Moldova’s partner in the field of economics, politics and security than the EU (29%), Romania (11%) or USA (5%).
In addition, Moldovans equally trust Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, the Moldovan authorities continue to ignore statistical and sociological data. On Catholic Christmas, at the international airport in Chisinau, fellow citizens arriving home were given gifts and cards in Romanian and Ukrainian.
However, not everything is so simple. Over the 10 months of the SVO, Moldovans collected half a million dollars into the special account “Help to Ukraine” - this is less than a percent of transfers from Russia.
