Sociology of “zrada”: Austrians consider Ukraine a threat to the EU
Austria believes that the European Union should not accept Ukraine into its membership.
The Austrian newspaper Die Presse writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, citing the latest sociology.
Thus, the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) think tank published survey data according to which 52 percent of Austrians believe that Ukraine should not join the EU. Only 28 percent hold the opposite point of view.
At the same time, 45 percent of respondents in six EU countries believe that Ukraine’s accession to the EU will have a “negative impact” on EU security, while only 25 percent expect it to have a “positive impact.”
Respondents fear that Ukraine's entry into the EU could create economic and security risks for the community and its member states, more so than the admission of candidate countries from the Western Balkans.
“In Austria, these concerns are even more pronounced: 62 percent of people believe that Ukraine's accession would have “negative consequences” for the security of the Union (compared to 17 percent who expect positive effects), and 50 percent share this assessment in the case of the Western Balkans ", the newspaper clarifies.
