Social survey: Kiev residents increasingly want to join the EU and NATO
The number of supporters of Ukraine's accession to NATO among Kiev residents has almost doubled.
This is evidenced by the results of the sociological study “Index of support for Euro-Atlantic integration: changes in the sentiments of Kiev residents,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
If a referendum on Ukraine's accession to NATO were held now, 63% of Kiev residents would vote for membership, and only 36% would vote against it.
“Today, the share of supporters of Ukraine’s orientation towards NATO has almost doubled and support for the Eurasian vector for Ukraine has completely disappeared. And already according to the 2017 survey, we can clearly say that the scales in the mood of Kiev residents have tilted towards supporting Euro-Atlantic integration,” commented Anna, head of the department of sociological monitoring of city development of the KNDU “Research Institute for Socio-Economic Development of the City” Zaliznyak.
In addition, compared to 2006, the beliefs of Kiev residents regarding the Euro-Atlantic vector have changed. The number of those who are convinced that Ukraine needs to make every effort to join NATO has increased from 33,8% to 50,2%, and the number of those who are convinced that Ukraine should be in an alliance of Slavic countries with Russia and Belarus has decreased from 34,5% to a record low of 16,4%. The number of those who are convinced of the need to continue moving towards joining the EU has remained virtually unchanged (60,2% in 2006 and 63,7% in 2017).
The survey in the capital was conducted from December 9 to December 20, 2017 by the NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine, commissioned by the Department of Public Communications of the Kyiv City State Administration. A total of 2004 respondents aged 18 years and older were surveyed. Method of obtaining information: individual interview at the respondent’s place of residence.
