The Moldova-EU Association Agreement may be ratified next week
Chisinau, June 24 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) – The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova may ratify the association agreement with the European Union next week. Speaker Igor Korman said that he would propose to consider this document immediately after its signing on June 27.

“After signing, the association agreement will be immediately submitted to parliament. I will propose that the document be considered urgently and put it forward for ratification next week,” said the speaker, quoted by the portal noi.md.
Corman clarified that the agreement provides for transition periods, as well as the possibility of revising the provisions if problems arise for agricultural producers. The speaker assured that the association agreement with the EU was drawn up solely in the interests of Moldova.
Meanwhile, the situation in Moldova on the eve of the signing of this document is tense. The parliamentary faction of the Communists stated that it would not vote for ratification of the agreement, since many of its provisions are unconstitutional.
According to the portal actualitati.md, members of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, activists of the Young Guard and ordinary citizens staged a mass protest today against the signing of the association agreement, gathering in front of the European Union mission in the Republic of Moldova.
The protesters demanded a referendum on this important issue. They turned to the head of the EU delegation to Moldova, Pirque Tappiola, saying that, according to 70% of Moldovans, the country is developing in the wrong direction. The rally participants called on the European Union not to interfere in the affairs of other countries; they fear that “after the signing of the association agreement, the residents of Moldova will experience for themselves what it means to be an associated member of the EU - the already weak economy of the Republic of Moldova will collapse, prices will soar, the national currency will fall below baseboards."
“Residents of the country are leaving en masse, schools and hospitals are being closed. The vector of external development of Moldova should be decided by the people of our republic, and not by several representatives of the coalition,” said PSRM executive secretary Vlad Batrincea.
On the eve of the signing of the association agreement, Moldovan experts said that the Moldovan leadership did not inform the population well enough about this event and that the ratification of the document would not go smoothly, the IPN agency writes.
“What the coalition could not do, the opposition managed to do. The latter were able to convince the majority of the population that the association agreement with the EU is something bad for the Republic of Moldova, and our future lies in the Eurasian Union,” former presidential adviser Victor Grebenshchikov said on public television. He believes that the new government, which may come to parliament after the November elections, may denounce the association agreement.
Expert Corneliu Ciurea, in turn, noted that deputies from the parliamentary opposition will hinder the ratification of the Association Agreement, in addition, “there are deputies of coalition parties who do not very firmly follow party lines.” All this reduces the chances of ratification of the agreement, he said.
