Preservation of Ukrainian gas transit depends on Europe - Putin
Russia is ready to maintain gas transit through the Ukrainian gas transportation system, which is what Germany is worried about.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin stated this today at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I assured the Federal Chancellor that we will fully fulfill our obligations under the transit contract - even after she leaves her post as Federal Chancellor, Russia will fulfill all its obligations. We are doing this now and will continue to do this,” Putin said.
He emphasized that Nord Stream 2 is 2 thousand km shorter than the Ukrainian route, more environmentally friendly, reduces hydrocarbon emissions into the atmosphere by 5 times and is cheaper than transit through Ukraine.
“We are ready to transit gas through the territory of Ukraine after 2024, but we must understand for how long, in what volume, and for this we must receive an answer from our European partners - how much are they willing to buy from us, this is an obvious thing .
We cannot sign a transit contract if we do not have supply contracts to our customers in Europe. And taking into account the green agenda, which is already being implemented in Europe, the question arises whether gas will be purchased from us at all and how much. This is a subject for discussion.
In any case, this is a purely commercial issue. We are not only ready to discuss this, we are actually ready to move towards it. This is especially true for deliveries to southern Europe. Consumption volumes are growing, and I hope this will continue to happen in the coming years. Today, German and European consumers do not have a more reliable source than Russian gas,” Putin concluded.
