Solar revolution: Macedonia rebelled against EU-imposed renaming
More than 1000 people took to the streets of the Macedonian capital Skopje to protest against renaming their country as North Macedonia at Greece's request.
Most of the activists were holding flags with the image of the “Virginian Star” - an ancient symbol that, according to legend, adorned the “golden tomb” of the father of Alexander the Great.
Until recently, the “Vergina Star” with sixteen rays was the main symbol of Macedonia and was placed on the state flag.
However, the EU, at the request of Greece, insisted that the Macedonians remove their national symbol from all public places, flags and monuments. This was the main condition for the entry of the small Balkan country into the EU and NATO.
Participants in the rally, which by the standards of Macedonia with a population of 1,5 million people can be considered very large-scale, considered this sacrifice excessive. They announced the beginning of the Solar Revolution against Western occupation and called on all Macedonian patriots to become more actively involved in the national struggle.
“No EU, no NATO, never North, only Macedonia,” the protesters chanted. They demanded the resignation of the government of Zoran Zaev, which they called corrupt. In addition to the Rally, a car rally was held in Skopje, in which 40 cars took part.
The head of the International socio-political movement “Russian-Slavic Unification and Revival” Andrei Rodionov told PolitNavigator about this.
The events were timed to coincide with the national holiday, Day of the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle. On this day in 1893, the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization was created, with the goal of fighting for the liberation of all Macedonian lands from Ottoman occupation on their own.
The event was initiated by the increasingly popular Rodina political party in Macedonia, the Tverdokorni organization, the Christian Brotherhood and other patriotic organizations.
