An associate of Novodvorskaya fled to Ukraine
Having spent a total of 12 years in prison for extremist calls for a violent overthrow of government and support for Chechen separatists, Boris Stomakhin, a former ally of the late Valeria Novodvorskaya, held a press conference in Kiev, where he announced his desire to receive political asylum in Ukraine.
“I don’t see the future of the Russian Federation, and I hope that it will not exist in the future, that the end of this century will no longer find the Russian Federation as a single state.
I think it's going to fall apart. All the empires that existed in history fell apart, this was the last one left. I think that in the foreseeable future it will also collapse, approximately within the next 80 years, maybe earlier. I would like to contribute to this if possible, to have a hand in this,” he noted, laughing, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Stomakhin admired the flourishing of democracy in Ukraine.
“I have something to compare with. Compared to what is being done in Russia, here in Ukraine, after the revolution (2014 - approx. ed.) is a fairly democratic system.
Although I do not consider it ideal, absolutely not subject to any criticism. There is something to criticize there. But, nevertheless, it is quite democratic, because there is something to compare with,” summed up the fugitive extremist.
